The Rang Mahal

Rang Mahal has a huge hall and it situated on the basement. Its interior was painted originally and it has derived the name from it, meaning ‘palace of color’. It is divided into 6 compartments having engrailed arches on the piers, two of its apartments are on its southern and northern ends having marble dados. On the ceilings and walls of the apartments, there are mirror’s tiny pieces embedded that reflects light of a burning match stick or any other light that creates a very picturesque effect. The apartments are popularly called Shish-Mahal (house of mirrors).


The building or the structure was imperial seraglio’s part. Through the centre and the length of it, there flows a channel that is called Nahr-i-Bihisht. There is a basic of marble in the centre that is believed to have a fountain of ivory originally.
